Hi Jenna,

I just posted a comment in your blog. Just add to it that the style for a blog post is more unrefined than that of a journal paper. It's supposed to be faster to write. It gets you immediate feedback. It gets a conversation going. That's a completely different ballpark from the paper writing style.

Wow--I really could not disagree more with the arguments in this post. As an academic and a blogger, I find the academic blogging community (of which there are hundreds to thousands of members) to be one of the most significant venues for serious, rigorous, and polished thinking.

Indeed, this post is a case in point--it stimulated me to think about the role of blogging in my academic life and to articulate my views in my own blog, at http://jennamcwilliams.blogspot.com/2009/09/blogging-is-not-serious-writing-oh-re.html. I would love for you to take a look and comment!
